History - English Viniculture

The tradition of vine growing and wine making was introduced to Britain by the Romans, but was mostly lost at the time of Henry VIII when the Monasteries were dissolved.

It was not until 1946 that the scientist Ray Barrington Brock introduced varieties of wine grape suitable for the cooler English climate, much of the success of our and other English Vineyards stems from his original research. There are now over 200 vineyards in the United Kingdom.
